How to Grow the Perfect Pumpkin

It is finally fall...even though it is still warm, we are getting in the spirit with everything pumpkin. Pumpkin spice latte, pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread. Whether you use them for carving or cooking, pumpkins do not disappoint. Here’s some tips on how to plant, grow, and harvest pumpkins!

  • Pumpkins need a lot of room and a long growing season, if you live in the south try to plant early July.
  • Pumpkins do best when the seeds are planted directly in the ground.
  • Pumpkins are HEAVY feeders, they grow best with rich soil. Make sure to use compost before you sow seeds. Soil conditioners are great to use when preparing your soil.
  • Pumpkins are very thirsty, make sure to water 1 inch per week.
  • Pinch off the fuzzy ends of each vine after a few pumpkins have formed. This will stop vine growth so that the plant’s energies are focused on the fruit.
  • When harvesting, cut the pumpkin off the vine carefully with a sharp knife or pruners; do not tear. Make sure to be careful because they do bruise.

If you know how you are going to use your pumpkins, below is a list of seeds to grow your perfect pumpkin.

Pumpkins for carving: ‘Autumn Gold’ great for carving or decorating.

Perfect pumpkins for pies: ‘Sugar Treat’ semi-bush hybrid. Ideal for cooking and baking.

Colorful pumpkins: ‘Jarrahdale’ has blue-green skin and makes for great decorations. ‘Pepitas Pumpkin’ is an orange and green skin.
